In Loving Memory of Eddie Meltz
Our community mourns the unexpected passing of our longtime neighbor and friend, Eddie Meltz, on May 6, 2026. Eddie’s life was defined by courage, quiet strength, and an unwavering devotion to family, friends, and the place he called home.
Born on September 20, 1958, in Yonkers, New York, Eddie grew up in the Yonkers public schools, where his athletic talent and team spirit made him a familiar face on the fields and courts. He went on to play basketball for Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas—an achievement that reflected his drive, discipline, and determination to build a meaningful life.
Service was Eddie’s calling. Shortly after returning to Yonkers from college, he joined the Mount Vernon Fire Department, proudly serving for decades and retiring after a distinguished career. Eddie’s bravery and steadfast dedication were evident every day, and especially during his tour in the aftermath of the tragic events of 9/11. To Eddie, being a firefighter was never just a job; it was a promise—to show up, to protect, and to be counted on.
Beyond the firehouse, Eddie mastered the craft of interior and exterior house painting, offering his skill to neighbors throughout our area. What began as work on spare days became a family business after retirement—another way he poured reliability and pride into the community he loved.
Eddie’s greatest joy was his family. He was the beloved son of the late Edward and Doris (Loos) Meltz, and a proud father to Edward R. Meltz, John H. Meltz, and Thomas J. Meltz. He is also survived by his brothers, Richard and Thomas Meltz, and by many nieces and nephews who brought him deep happiness. The bonds he shared with his family were the center of his world and guided the way he lived each day.
Those who knew Eddie will remember his steady presence, work ethic, and willingness to help anyone in need. He cherished the outdoors and found peace in nature—as an avid fisherman and game hunter, he spent many happy hours on Candlewood Lake and along the docks in Candlewood Knolls. Whether on duty, at home, or by the water, Eddie carried himself with humility, loyalty, and care.
Eddie touched countless lives through his service, his love for family, and his enduring kindness. He will be remembered as courageous and steadfast, a neighbor who could be relied upon, and a friend whose quiet generosity spoke louder than words. His memory will remain a source of comfort and pride to all who had the privilege of knowing him, and his legacy of devotion will live on in our community.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Eddie’s family and loved ones. May we honor him by looking out for one another, lending a hand where it’s needed, and cherishing the everyday moments that meant so much to him.
You will be missed, dear friend…BK and your neighbors at Candlewood Knolls.
